I left my two dogs in a kennel a few years ago and my beagle got stressed he started chewing his own leg, which was bleeding when I picked him up. I was put off using kennels after that experience. Has anyone else had something like this happen?

Leroy - maybe you were just unlucky, my dog has always looked fine when he comes back from kennels. I guess some dogs are more easily stressed than others or maybe it wasn't a great kennel. But if your other dog was ok maybe he just doesn't suit kennels.

I Recently lef tmy dog's with Hanrob, we ptreffered to pay the premium price to have them stay at Hanrob's airport facility rather than there Heathcote one, as heathcote takes 2000 dogs and the airport only about 40, we wanted our dogs looked after not dumped in a factry. Without our knowing Hanrob shipped them down to Heathecote the day we dropped them off (even though we paid the higher price specifically for the airport) then when the dogs were at heathcote the picked up kennel cough (even though they are vaccinated!!!!), nobody called us and the cough was picked up at Heathcote were they were never meant to be in the first place! Don't trust hanrob, they lied to us abut where our dogs were staying , over charged us and sent our dogs home sick, they didnt contact our emergency contact until the day before the dogs were due to be picked up by us! Don't send yr dogs to Hanrob, it's just a money making business not a business that looks after your pets!

Hi CJ. That sounds pretty bad, but how do you know they moved your dogs?

I am looking for a boarding kennel for my two puppies in the Toronto/Newcastle/Hunter valley area, can anyone recommend a kennel that they have used?

Hi CJ, you should be dissapointed that Hanrob transported your dogs to Heathcote, especially when you paid extra for the accommodation at the airport. As far as Kennel Cough is concerned though, vaccination is not a guarentee to stop Kennel Cough. A dog can be taken to a Kennel fully vaccinated and appear entirly healthy but unknown to anyone can carry the virus and be contagious for between 5 and 7 days before the cough appears. Once kennel staff do hear the cough it's a nightmare as most other dogs it has been in contact with will develop symtoms. The good news is that it isn't life threatening unless your dog is either very old, a very young puppy, or has a pre-existing medical condition, much like a bad cold isn't a danger to a healthy person.

I left my dogs at Hanrob over the Christmas/New Year period. They stayed at Heathcote and I had a look around the place before I left them. It was immaculate and the staff were great. I haven't seen the kennels at the airport but I was more than happy with the ones at Heathcote. I don't know where CJ came up with 2000 dogs staying there, I saw the whole place and there is no way they could hold anywhere near that many. Maybe it was an exaggeration. There's always a risk of picking up kennel cough when there are lots of dogs together, like decoy says even the vaccine doesn't stop them from getting it. I couldn't have been happier with them staying there, they will definitely be going back.

Hi CJ. I am an experienced kennel attendant and used to work at Hanrob and am very surprised at your unfortunate experience. I'm not sure why your dogs were transported to heathcote but I assure you that they received the very best and loving care. Yes, it is a large facility, but it does not hold 2000 dogs! At absolute full capacity, they can cater for up to 600 dogs and have ample staff and space to properly care for each and every dog. The layout of the site comprises several buildings, with the same staff members usually working in each building so that the dogs build a trusting relationship with their carer. As far as your dogs contracting kennel cough (or K9 cough - it's actual name), there are many different strains of this virus and just like the human flu vaccination, the C5 vaccination only covers a few of the common strains. Your dog can easily contract K9 cough at the local dog park, and logically, the chances of getting the virus are going to increase when your dog is around more dogs! Hanrob is an excellent boarding kennel facility and just because it's large, does not mean it's a factory! All of the staff working there are dog lovers who are dedicated to providing a quality service.

I have left my dogs at Hanrobs a number of times now sometimes for a week but at times for over a month and have always found them to return my dogs in as good if not better condition than when they left. The kennels were kept immaculately clean and the staff were genuinely caring in their attitude towards the pets. I cannot praise them highly enough. I too would like to know how you found out about them going to Heathcote. It is a shame about the kennel cough though as it can really knock the dogs about, but I know of a number of kennels that have had that problem this year.

I placed my dog into the guard dog training centre in berkshire, nsw. We decided to go on holidays and looked for a boarding kennel with training. We even visited the place to make sure it was suitable. From the outside it looked all good and the person at the front was pleasant. I specifically requested that my dog would be socialized especially with small dogs. This was written on the receipt. A few weeks later we droped him off. The person who received our dog, gave us pause to think, as he was more interested in selling us insurance then the care of Charlie. When we picked up my 2 weeks later. I could not believe what i saw. My dog appeared timid, tail between his leg. I spoke to one of the trainees that brought our. I asked him what sort of training they did with our dog. He said, "we intimidate them a little". The owner was within an earshot and i asked her if she intimated the dogs. I asked her to show me how they trained my dogs. She took our dog and started yanking the chain, yelling heal, heal, heal. Our dog looked afraid and timid. I said to her that this is not the correct way to get the heal command. She began yelling at me. Then another guy came. He demonstrated healing and before the heal command he yanked the chain so hard the dog yelped. I asked them to give me my dog and pay my bill and left. We then went to the vet. The vet told me that he had a Granuloma on his left paw. A Granuloma is caused by excessive licking. The vet asked me if this dog has been under a lot of stress. Please don't let this happen to your dog.
